The Role:
To deliver a wide range of civil engineering and public realm works under local authority and framework contracts, including utility ducting, footpath and road construction, active travel infrastructure, drainage, kerbing, and reinstatement. The Groundworker will work in live urban environments with high safety and quality standards, and must be able to follow company RAMS, engineering drawings, and specifications to ensure timely and compliant delivery of infrastructure works.
Responsibilities:
- Adhere to and maintain compliance with all Health and Safety procedures within your work. Ensuring you are responsible for yourself and/or team members who report into you.
- Carry out trenching and duct installation for ESB, telecoms, public lighting, and traffic light systems in accordance with technical drawings and utility separation requirements.
- Install street infrastructure including kerbs, tactile paving, cycle segregation kerbs, pedestrian crossings, and active travel measures to local authority and TII standards.
- Construct and reinstate public footpaths, cycle lanes, driveways, and carriageways using concrete, asphalt, and modular paving materials.
- Install surface water drainage, gully connections, and associated chambers.
- Carry out reinstatement in compliance with local authority or TII specifications (temporary and permanent).
- Operate small plant and tools (wacker plates, con saws, breakers, trench rammers) safely and efficiently.
- Implement and maintain safe working zones using signage, fencing, and supports in conjunction with traffic management teams.
- Read and interpret basic construction drawings, cross-sections, and site instructions from engineers and supervisors.
- Support the Supervisor and Site Engineer with material handling, installation quality, and coordination across multi-disciplinary crews.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in urban groundworks, civils, or utilities
- Experience in public realm enhancement schemes, active travel infrastructure, and footpath/cycleway improvements (Desirable)
- Familiarity with local authority and framework-type works, including delivery in busy, public-facing environments a distinct advantage
- Skilled in utility duct installation, drainage works, kerbing, and public realm finishes
- Proficient in using small plant and reinstating surfaces to required standards
- Strong communication with team members, supervisors, and traffic management crews
- Ability to work respectfully in public settings and represent the company to a high standard
- Understands the importance of programme delivery and quality assurance on framework projects
- Able to work efficiently and accurately with minimal rework
- Self-motivated, dependable, and safety-conscious
- Physically fit and willing to work in varying conditions and locations
